For impact-driven philanthropists, ending factory farming is among the most pressing global problems that we face. Every year, over 80 billion land animals and 50-150 billion fish are intensively farmed and slaughtered in conditions of immense suffering.

Work to alleviate this suffering remains incredibly neglected: In 2017, it is estimated that less than EUR 112 million was spent in efforts to end factory farming – less than the budget of the animated movie Kung Fu Panda 3.

And at the same time, the evidence indicates that some of the most effective interventions to help farmed animals can do so for just pennies per animal (and have nothing to do with promoting veganism).

In this talk, I will outline some of the most promising approaches to ending suffering on factory farms, and will consider the geographies, intervention types, and time-frames that both advocates and donors should have on their horizon.
